If I could give legal advice that would be the most helpful to people in general, it would be to always invoke your right to remain silent. It can’t hurt you, only help.  I don’t know many legal scholars who would recommend speaking to authorities without a lawyer present.  The number of people who would ordinarily be released but decided to wave their 5th Amendment rights and incidentally, were charged with additional offenses is quite extraordinary.  Nevertheless, you should always know your rights.  Be informed.
